Eugenie John who wrote as E. Marlitt lived from 1825-1887. Her life is interesting, having a German princess as her patron, studying music and performing as a singer, going deaf, being a companion at court and then retiring to live with her brother to write. Her novels were serialized in magazines and became quite popular in Germany in the last half of the 19th century. Translators frequently worked from the magazine serializations, thus having competing publications in English, frequently before her books had been published in German.
"Das Haideprinzesschen" or "The Princess of the Moor" was published in English in the volume I read in 1900 by M.A. Donohue & Co. in Chicago. No translator is credited, with many German words left in the text and occasionally a word missing from a sentence. While it is certainly readable, this edition appears to have been brought to market in a hasty fashion. The cover bears a picture of a lady we assume is the main character with a green hat and a red sash tied around the brim. The work has been credited as having been in written in 1871/1872. I read one criticism that Marlitt lacked literary weight, making her popular for juvenile readers. Weighty or not, it is a thoroughly entertaining tale.
The main character is Lenore whose mother died and left her to be raised by her grandmother in the Haide, a rural country area where birds, trees and butterflies are Lenore's major companions. Her grandmother at the end of her life reclaims her Jewish roots; and anti-Semitic sentiment in the German court becomes a theme throughout the story. Lenore is forced to abandon her home known as the Dierkhof to join her father. Her father is a scientific expert specializing in antiquities. He's been so wrapped up in his work, that he has not seen Lenore since she was a baby.
At 17, her grandmother's caretaker Ilse goes with her to the large estate of businessman Eric Claudius called Carolinenlust. Lenore does not like the man who appears so stern and causes her to be afraid. When her father declines to handle her finances, Claudius is put in charge of the substantial amount of money left to Lenore from her grandmother. We are then introduced to Charlotte and her brother Dagobert who Eric adopted as babies. Dagobert has joined the military. Charlotte longs to discover royal roots to elevate her position in society. On her first day at the estate, Lenore finds a secret door leading to a residential section that has been sealed and was formerly inhabited by Eric's brother Lothar who committed suicide when his wife passed away. As the novel proceeds Charlotte becomes convinced that she is Lothar's child, deserving of a royal position at court.
Lenore also discovers a castle-like house that has been walled off but is part of the estate. She climbs a tree to see the little girl Gretchen playing there and unlocks the gate with a rusted key. We learn that the angry Christian bookkeeper Herr Eckhof is estranged from his daughter who lives there and will not communicate with her or his two grandchildren. Complications arise when Claudius discovers that Eckhof has been compelling his accountants to contribute way beyond their means to the Christian church. Eckhof is an explosive character filled with bitterness and judgmental pronouncements on most of the other characters.
The story unfolds with many interesting complications such as Lenore's father's bout of insanity and a destructive tantrum, intrigue in breaking into the sealed chambers, Lenore's introduction into the court of the Princess, the appearance of Lenore's aunt Christine and her trying to pry money from her sweethearted niece. At one point, Lenore is working by writing names on seed packets to earn the money to pay for her father's board. She loans Christine eight thalers. Christine then purchases a little dog for four. The relationship between Eric and the young Lenore grows as she discovers him to be an honest truthful man. She deeply regrets what she views as her betrayal of him. There is a fire, a huge storm, and the true identities of Charlotte and Dogbert revealed before the novel's romantic conclusion.
Perhaps maybe not the weightiest of novels, this is nevertheless a superb read that kept my interest. The themes of prejudice, greed, jockeying for position, kindness, betrayal and love more than make it accessible to the modern reader. This is a sweet gem to discover! Enjoy!
