The Earth died when aliens rained thermonuclear warheads on her cities and sprayed the surface with a bio-terminator. A deadly poison drifted to every corner of the planet, threatening the last survivors with annihilation.
For a soldier in Antarctica like Creed, there is only one way to keep breathing untainted air. He must bury his hatred of the extraterrestrials and join the Jelk Corporation as an assault trooper, leaving the planet for outer space. In return for his and other people's services, the corporation will house the last humans for as long as the assault troopers keep winning.
For the price of living and the chance to save humanity, Creed has to wear a shock chip in his neck - Jelk discipline is harsh - and he has to don a symbiotic battlesuit that feeds off his sweat. Human life is cheap in the vast alien war. The assault troopers are little more than suicide soldiers, but for humanity to escape extinction, they must survive. But Creed didn't agree to the bargain in order to remain a dog to the aliens. He has a plan, and he'll need all his cunning to beat these star born bastards and begin the road to freedom for the human race.
Assault Troopers is a tale of human extinction and ultimate desperation, written by bestselling author Vaughn Heppner.

This book, and it's sequel "Planet Strike" are surprisingly good. Unlike the title suggests, these are full fledged novels, with complexity, development, action, surprise, more development, more action, some tantalizing clues, more action, and a VERy welcome fully developed plot line that is paced in a deliberate, enjoyable fashion. These are REAL books! They read like novels, because they ARE novels! It is so pleasurable to find a full length book in this world of self-published chapters described as books. I have NO problem buying each sequel, but each NOVEL is full length, stands on its own merit, and is vividly told.Having said all that, they are not great books. The story is told in a simplified fashion, without a lot of extraneous detail, when perhaps some more "ambiance" and character development would be valuable, but nonetheless, the story is enjoyable, and the tantalizing hints of the origins behind ancient artifacts in deep space, intergalactic warfare, with ancient earth mythology and religion is quite interesting. I definitely recommend these books, they are quite fun, and completely worth their cost. They are an excellent value and enjoyable read.

Assault Troopers Extinction Wars Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Vaughn Heppner Christian Rummel Audible Studios Books Reviews
I was torn between a 4 or 5 star review. It came down to me still thinking about the nuances and things hinted at and left unsaid in the story the next day that pushed me to 5 stars. Its a great story on many levels. On the surface its quite simple, an angry, battle hardened young man, is at the right place at the right time to perhaps salvage the human race from extinction. Luck favors the bold. Then there are the aliens that perhaps are not what they seem, and real fiend or foe may be just as jumbled. Then there are the artifacts and their back story that is again perhaps misleading. The author has done an excellent job defining for the reader how this universe operates but from the perspective of how the Jelk wants us to perceive it. They are hiding much and deceit seems to be their favorite game.
I want the next book yesterday.
When you start with nothing. The only way you can go is up. I think it will be amazing to watch a complete civilization grow up with no single point of reference to watch it grow from. With artificial gravity even a small asteroid could be hollowed out and made in to a city of great size. Or maybe just a small home.. As for sealing it. One small ice ball from the Ort cloud could have enough material to supply dozens of small city's.. So how do you then attack as asteroid?. You can't. You see asteroids come in belts. Thousands and thousands of them in one system. Then in some areas a few dozen stars.. Okay, average city has 60K residents. One thousand per system ten systems per cluster. Can you say 600Billion people. So how do you fill that many places test tubes every woman turns out 24per year. 120in 50yrs See where this goes. You take it from here VH

this author is a fun read...optimistic as all get out...I love all his books...this starts another series and I plan on reading them all...with that said, he likes the Star Trek series as several characters are modeled on the Frengi of Deep Space Nine, but he takes it much further...with hints that the answers are coming future novels...
This is a twist on a well-worn theme in SF. Alien attackers, valiant humans winning against all odds, a cosmic mystery to be solved. Big muscle-bound hero, brave beautiful lover, evil gargoyle villains, Spock-like sidekick. You know the story, and there are no surprises among the characters, the battles are sometimes tedious, things happen with no explanation. The moral of the story is be audacious, be a leader, being really smart is for tech types and androids. It's about guts and glory. I seem to be talking myself out of that 4 star rating. For all its defects the story does carry you along, and it does not require much of the reader. Relax your mind and keep reading. But I don't think I will bother with the next one in the series.
This isn't a bad book, but it's not great. For self-published work, it's actually better than many.
The characters seem a little two dimensional. Told from a first person perspective, this can be expected, but aside from the protagonist Creed and the antagonists, the other characters are all sort of flat, without much tying me to them emotionally.
This book reads pretty quick and has some refreshingly new elements that show a lot of imagination. I look forward to seeing some of that fleshed out.
Of course, like many space operas, the hero of the story is thrust into a fight for the survival of the human race as a species.
I bought the next book, so I'm not giving up on this story. Like I said, the aliens and the space politics has some very creative elements that I want to hear more about.
"Heroic Desperation" is the feeling that I get from reading this story. I have taken my time to absorb all that Mr. Heppner has transmuted to my senses through his characters, settings and scenes. I again take the usual comfort that this vehicle he has constructed will deliver to me a rewarding and satisfying experience. I am only halfway through the story but am beginning to guess the outcome of this first volume. He has shown his mastery for the vastness for the "space action/opera", creating totally new worlds, themes of destruction and galaxy spanning corporations with straight up devilish adversaries. I cheerfully find myself rooting for the courageous but deadly team of human mercenaries led by the die hard son of "Mad Jack" Creed and ably assisted by the Tech smart Rollo, the faithful and tough Dimitri, the sharp intellect of Ella...within the first hour I was hooked and now read with the required breaks to reflect over what is happening to these last humans who truly are the last hope of humanity...or so we perceive. The introduction of the enigmatic artifact also lends a universal question as to the nature of the forerunners...one that I am too happy to speculate on and discover along with the rest of you. I sense at least another five to seven novels in this promising series and I know that Vaughn will deliver the goods. An excellent read and a hearty well done!
